Classes are full but they want to learn
School is important to these students.
Teaching in rural Nepal can really make a difference because if a child can gain a good education they have a chance to get involved in a better job and really help their families
Name of project: English teaching in a rural school in Kavre.
What is the project about: We are looking for volunteers interested in working with the Nepali English teachers in Kavre. Our aim is to introduce new ideas in teaching into the classroom for the teachers as well as the students. By doing this our aim is to improve the student’s fluency in English as well as sharing teaching ideas. The schools are usually open 6 days a week with Saturday being the day off but be aware in rural Nepal you will often find you have extra days off for festivals. Your day depending on which school you’re based at will depend on the
class time table but usually you will be expected to attend the school between the hours of 9 am -4pm. Depending on your teaching experience you will first start as a teaching assistant until you become confident in this environment before moving on to take the classes for yourself.
Placement Location: The school is based around 80 kms from Kathmandu in the village called Kavre near Dhading Besi..
Start and End Dates: Ongoing starting most weeks except for festivals. Note you can still volunteer in the festivals but there will not be a lot of work going on. Though it’s a good way to see how Nepali celebrates their culture & religion.
Minimum Duration: Four weeks for this project.
Working Days: Usually it’s a 6 day week with Saturday off (plus festivals)
Working Hours: Vary depending on the work load at the time but please get involved in extracurricular activities so you get to know the community more.
Number of Volunteers at any one time: The school can take a maximum of 5 volunteer’s at one time one working together on various subjects. The more volunteers here the better as we would involve them in extra school activities.
Age Requirements: 18+ are accepted
Food and Accommodation: You will be staying in a local homestay near the school with a family who speaks good English but if you get chance take some time to learn Nepali with them as it’s a lot of fun & everyone will be happy to help you. The food itself is all fresh from the fields & garden with the stable diet being Dhal Bhat, Tarkari (rice, curry & lentils).
Visa Type: Standard tourist visa
Arrival and Departure Airport: Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu
Placement location: The school is in the village of Kavre around 80 kms away from Kathmandu. It’s a rural area with some great hiking routes as well as viewpoints to catch glimpses of the Himalayas.
Arrival & Orientation: As a volunteer you will be met at the airport by one of the team & taken to the guesthouse so you can rest. Here you will spend a day acclimatizing and getting to know our team before heading out to the project in Kavre.
