This school is very remote so be ready to experience rural Nepal at its very best. Great food, great people and an experience you will never forget.

Name of project: Teaching English at the Aakala higher secondary school in Gorkha


What is the project about: We are looking for volunteers interested in helping to improve the level of English in a local village school in Gorkha. The school itself is a local government one provided to educate the poorer communities in the district & provide classes for pupils up to the age of 16. Your duties will be working alongside the Nepali/English teacher helping them to learn new ideas while at the same time building confidence to try taking the classes by yourself.


Placement Location: The school is based Paluntar Municipality Ward No 6 Gorkha district.


Start and End Dates: Ongoing starting most weeks except for festivals. Note you can still volunteer in the festivals but there will not be a lot of work going on because schools will be closed and everyone will be in festival mood. Though it’s a good way to see how Nepali celebrates their culture & religion.


Minimum Duration: One month for this project.


Working Days: Usually it’s a 6 day week with Saturday off (plus festivals)


Working Hours: Vary depending on the work load at the time and the classes themselves but if you have ideas on getting the students to practise English then please talk with the Head master and implement the idea. 


Number of Volunteers at any one time: The school can take a

maximum of 4 volunteers at one time in various classes as if you are proficient in other subjects please tell the team member organising this placement.


Age Requirements: 18+ are accepted


Food and Accommodation: You will be staying in a local homestay with a family that most of the members will speak some English. Usually there will be a student at the homestay from the same school who will help you to and from the school.


Visa Type: Standard tourist visa


Arrival and Departure Airport: Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu


Placement location: The school itself is around 7-8 hours away from Kathmandu by bus. Follow the main highway south towards Mugling before turning onto the Pokhara road then around 10-15 kms you turn off into Gorkha district.


Arrival & Orientation: As a volunteer you will be met at the airport by one of the team & escorted into Thamel to a hotel so you can rest and eat. The team member will make sure you are comfortable, provide you with any information you need as well as their phone number. Then the next day they will show you some of the sights of Kathmandu just to help you settle in before helping you to the bus park where you will catch a bus to Gorkha.  They will arrange someone to meet you at the other end and be in regular contact throughout your stay so please don’t hesitate to ring them for help & advice.

What’s included in the Registration Fee? All of the documentation needed for your application to be processed. Airport pickup and 24 hour support while at the project.


What's included in the Program Fee? Food & lodgings at the Centre and all of the support you need while there plus a donation to the running of the Centre itself.


What extra costs will I have? For tourist activities you wish to take part in & extras like alcohol, cigarettes, etc.
